New York City College of Technology: TYPOGRAPHIC DESIGN II

MAGAZINE COVERS & DOUBLE SPREAD LAYOUTS

Students are required to design 2 magazine covers and 2 double spread magazine layouts (4 page spread). The industry and audience the 2 magazines are associated with must be different, for example a Skater magazine and an Interior Decoration magazine. Cover layouts and double spread magazine layouts must also be different layouts and styles. Single page dimensions should be 8.5” x 11” or a larger custom size.

REQUIREMENTS:

Color: Full color (CMYK process color), resolution 300 dpi Smart, attractive and complimentary typography
Hierarchy of type is required. Include in your hierarchy: Magazine nameplate, headlines, sub heads, captions, by line, photo credits, page numbers, publication title, date and pull quotes.
Adobe In-Design required for Layout. Adobe Photoshop and or Adobe Illustrator for artwork. Imagery must be 50% or less of the double spread magazine layouts (4 page spread). Magazine cover to have single background image.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT POSTER DESIGN

Create a compelling advertising campaign with a public service message that is personal to each student. The campaign consisted of 3 print ads of various sizes. In addition to smart typography, continuity was a key factor to this design task. While each image needs to stand alone, the collection of images had to use cohesive visual vocabulary.

REQUIREMENTS:

Ad campaign must have a headline, sub-headline, call-to-action text and minimum of 1 image.
Additional items, like logos, quotes or image captions are not required by accepted.
At least 2 different fonts must be used.
